Mitchell Street Soundscape Community Listening Session

  • mitchell street arts 710 West Historic Mitchell Street Milwaukee, WI, 53204 United States (map)

Want to directly shape what your neighborhood can sound like? Please come to a MiSA listening session for the upcoming Mitchell Street Soundscape! We want to hear from near Southside residents and business owners what ideas they have for the project.

About the Soundscape project:

MiSA is building a soundscape on Mitchell Street! The project involves mounting multiple outdoor small speakers to buildings along the street to create a synchronized calming audio environment for pedestrians. Our goal is cover 3 - 4 blocks near the Kunzelmann Esser.

The soundscape will be a year round public art installation. Examples of auditory environments the project may produce are live feeds of ocean waves off the coast of Puerto Rico (given the large Puerto Rican community on Mitchell Street), rain forest sounds, and binaural rhythms for stress reduction. Quarterly community listening sessions will inform all upcoming sound clips and provide an immediate way for residents to be civically engaged.

The Mitchell Street Soundscape is designed to counter the distressing noise associated with streets. The project is inspired by various urban soundscape programs around the world and there are a number of positive impacts we are looking to address. These include increasing the walkability of the street, encouraging a calming outdoor environment, and promoting economic activity for local businesses.
